Finnish Company Provides Technology for New Elderly Lab in Malaysia

Jun 2023

The Malaysian Research Institute on Ageing (MyAgeing) has just launched its Physical Functional Lab, which boasts an advanced rehab and exercise equipment from the Finnish company HUR.

The facility is located at the MyAgeing institute in UPM Serdang, and its goal is to facilitate healthy ageing through scientific methodology to improve the physical well-being of the elderly population. This is to be achieved through a stronger understanding of the role of exercise, nutrition, and preventive healthcare in maintaining good physical and mental health.

The laboratory is being set up by healthtech startup IMM Healthcare. It will conduct research projects by MyAgeing in collaboration with IMM Carehub, a center specialized in services for seniors, and HUR. The laboratory will conduct research on how to better manage the physical fitness of seniors, while reducing the risks of age-related diseases.

In 2020, the World Bank estimated that seniors will account for around 14% of Malaysia’s population by 2044, with this age group expected to exceed one-fifth of the population by 2056. In 2022, the Department of Statistics Malaysia revealed that Putrajaya and Selangor were among the states with the largest number of seniors.
