EMA Announces Energy Partnerships with PSA and Shell

Jun 2019

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore announced two new EMA partnerships that total a combined USD 12 million. The aim is to support the uptake of new energy storage solutions and renewable energy solutions like solar.

The first partnership is with the PSA, one of the world’s largest port operators with flagship operations in Singapore, and it aims to transform PSA’s port operations and make them more ecologically friendly. A joint R&D grant call is being issued under the partnership for innovative smart grid technologies and solutions for energy management closing on July 2019.

Two problem statements have been released. The first one seeks innovative and cost effective solutions to enable improved electricity network reliability and efficiency, reduce contracted capacity/ peak demand, and predictive condition monitoring and fault diagnostics. The proposed solution should form a centralized platform for network management or a Smart Grid Management System in Pasir Panjang Terminal. Under the second statement, EMA and PSA are seeking solutions in the designing and deployment of distributed energy resources (DERs), which includes a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), for market participation and energy optimization in Pasir Panjang Terminal. Industry partners and research communities are welcome to co-develop and test-bed innovative energy solutions with PSA Singapore.

The second partnership is with Shell and aims to support local energy startups with their scalability. EMA and Shell will jointly set up an enterprise development program to incubate promising local starts-up and help translate their solutions to the market. These start-ups will have the opportunity to work alongside Shell and EMA to develop and testbed their solutions. The partnership will provide capability building and funding for solutions in emerging areas such as distributed power generation, energy storage systems, and the Internet of Things. A call for applications will be released later this year.
