Dutch company Aqua-Spark, a sustainable aquaculture-focused investment fund, has announced the opening of an office in Bangkok, Thailand, the first outside the Netherlands. The company revelated that the new location will focus on deal sourcing for the main fund headquartered in the Netherlands, and improving Aqua-Spark’s market intelligence in Southeast Asia, with a focus on dealflow.
Aqua-Spark also explained that it chose the Thai capital because of its growing agri-food start-up ecosystem and is a key hub in global seafood supply chains. In effect, Bangkok is recognized to host some of the largest global seafood conglomerates, as well as leading research institutes. It is estimated that Thailand’s agri-food and aquaculture industry is worth USD 43 billion, with a total aquaculture output of 890,000 metric tons per year.
Aqua-Spark highlighted that around 90% of global seafood production takes place in Asia, with the region expected to account for over 70%of the global seafood consumption by 2030. In Thailand, the company will seek to connect with regional aquatech companies transforming the industry through digitalization.
