APM Terminals, a Division of the Danish Maersk, to Expand Large Seaport in Northern Vietnam

Apr 2023

Vietnam’s HATECO Group Joint Stock Corporation (HATECO) and APM Terminals, a division of the Danish shipping giant Maersk, have teamed up to raise the capacity of Lach Huyen Port in northern Vietnam. The strategic cooperation comprises the construction of two additional deep-water berths at the port in Haiphong City.

As a part of the agreement, APM Terminals will provide financial, operational, and technical support to HATECO, who acts as an investor. The two berths, with a length of 450 meters each, will be capable of handling containerships with a capacity of up to 18,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs). HATECO expects to finalize the plans for construction and equipment installation by the end of 2024.

The initial phase includes a new terminal anticipated to become operational in the first quarter of 2025 featuring five ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and 14 rubber-tire gantry (RTG) cranes. The project will facilitate trade activities between the country’s northern region and major markets in Europe and the US. This port expansion plan is also intended to create more opportunities for customers and cargo firms in the north of Vietnam.
