Vietnam’s Long Thanh International Airport (LTH) is on track to begin technical flights on December 19, 2025, ahead of its full operational launch in June 2026. This move is to transform the country’s aviation landscape. The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the project’s operator, will transition all long-haul services from Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN) to LTH, positioning it as the nation’s primary international hub.
LTH Deputy Director Truong Trung Thanh said the initial focus will be on flights from Europe, India, the Middle East and North America, with routes to Northeast Asia planned for 2027. Tan Son Nhat will continue to handle short-haul flights within Southeast Asia. An airline consultation committee has already secured strong support from carriers. Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air will anchor operations at the new hub, while Vietjet is also planning a dedicated MRO facility. Cargo giants FedEx and UPS have expressed interest in serving the airport.
LTH will launch with a capacity of 2.6 million passengers annually, expanding to 15 million by the end of 2027. The long-term development plan envisions four terminals and a total capacity of 100 million passengers. Supporting infrastructure upgrades, including expanded roads and a high-speed rail link to Ho Chi Minh City, are underway. With the government pushing for completion by the end of 2025, ACV is working closely with international equipment suppliers to ensure deadlines are met and supply chain risks mitigated.
