Vietnam and US Strengthen Defense Ties at Defense Expo

Jan 2025

Vietnam’s Prime Minister (PM) Pham Minh Chinh welcomed a delegation of aerospace, defense, and security companies from the US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) in Hanoi in December 2024. The delegation, led by USABC senior vice-president Brian McFeeters and I.M. Systems Group CEO Imelda Martin-Hum, joined the second Vietnam International Defense Expo 2024, organized by the Vietnamese Ministry of National Defense.

PM Chinh highlighted that the Vietnam-US comprehensive strategic partnership, established in 2023, has witnessed substantial growth across various sectors, particularly in economic, trade, and investment cooperation. He noted that political relations are at their strongest since normalization in 1995, setting a positive tone as both nations prepare to celebrate the 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2025. The Prime Minister emphasized Vietnam’s ambition for double-digit annual growth and its focus on emerging industries such as aerospace, aviation, maritime, and underground spaces.

Looking to the future, PM Chinh encouraged USABC and US enterprises to work closely with Vietnam to enhance partnerships in trade, technology transfer, investment, manufacturing, and training. He proposed a collaborative approach that harmonizes benefits and shares risks among stakeholders. The Prime Minister reiterated Vietnam’s commitment to protecting the legal rights and interests of investors while maintaining an environment conducive to peace and stability.

Additionally, PM Chinh called on US firms to advocate for the US government to foster sustainable economic cooperation between the two countries. He specifically requested recognition of Vietnam as a market economy and urged the removal of restrictions on high-tech exports to Vietnam. In response, McFeeters and other delegation members congratulated Vietnam on hosting the expo and expressed their commitment to supporting Vietnam in various strategic sectors. They acknowledged Vietnam’s adaptability and significant achievements while highlighting the potential for deeper cooperation to strengthen bilateral relations further. This collaborative spirit reflects both nations’ shared goals of enhancing security and economic growth in the region.
