UVCell Solar, a US-based renewable energy developer, and Iozela Data Center, a Southeast Asian data center developer, have signed a strategic agreement to develop a sustainable data center complex and renewable energy hub in Malaysia. The project includes a new data center campus in Penang, focusing on sustainability and integrating nature with technology. Additionally, UVCell will develop a renewable energy hub in Pahang, comprising solar and biomass farms expected to generate 300-500MW of power. The partners aim to create a model for ESG-compliant technology by integrating full facilities, including management offices, staff accommodation, and a green plantation farm.
The collaboration plans to partner with top-tier vendors from Japan, China, USA, and Singapore to bring technological expertise in renewable energy, data infrastructure, and sustainability. The project will focus on employing and training local workers from Penang and Pahang, emphasizing the development of skilled professionals from surrounding communities.
This development aligns with Malaysia’s growing data center sector, which is expected to expand from 710MW in 2024 to 1.36GW by 2029. It follows recent investments in the country by major tech companies, including Google’s USD 2 billion data center campus groundbreaking in October 2024 and Amazon Web Services’ cloud region launch in August 2024, accompanied by a USD 6 billion investment pledge through 2037.
The partnership between UVCell Solar and Iozela Data Center represents a significant step towards sustainable and technologically advanced infrastructure in Malaysia, combining renewable energy production with data center development to meet the growing demand for digital services in the region.
