US-Indonesia Trade Agreement Expands Agriculture Access

Mar 2026

On 19 February 2026, United States President Donald Trump announced an Agreement on Reciprocal Trade with Indonesia. According to a White House fact sheet, the arrangement will remove tariff barriers on more than 99% of United States products exported to Indonesia across all sectors. The agreement is intended to expand access to Indonesia’s market of more than 280 million people.

In the beef sector, Indonesia is expected to purchase at least 50,000 metric tons of United States beef each year. The agreement also recognizes the authority of the United States Department of Agriculture on food safety and animal health, which may facilitate additional export opportunities.

For biofuels, Indonesia will remove its 30% tariff on United States ethanol exports and eliminate measures that restrict ethanol imports. The agreement also outlines a plan for transportation fuels in Indonesia to include ethanol blends of up to 5% by 2028 and up to 10% by 2030.

In the dairy sector, the agreement will remove tariffs on United States dairy exports and recognize United States regulatory oversight. It also includes commitments to protect 40 commonly used cheese names to ensure that United States producers can continue marketing products with those names in Indonesia.

For grains and related products, the agreement provides tariff free access for United States ethanol, corn, distillers grains, corn gluten meal, sorghum, and barley. Industry organizations in the United States stated that the agreement could expand export opportunities and strengthen trade connections between the two countries.
