UK and Indonesia Strengthen Partnership Through New Infrastructure Initiative

Feb 2025

A newly announced UK-Indonesia sustainable infrastructure partnership is set to create opportunities for leading British engineering firms, including Arup, Mott MacDonald, and PwC, to contribute to infrastructure projects in Indonesia. Announced by the UK’s Indo-Pacific Minister in Jakarta last month, the initiative aims to support Indonesia’s net-zero ambitions while expanding business opportunities for British regional companies.

In addition to fostering investment opportunities, the partnership aims to integrate environmental best practices into new projects, contributing to the sector’s decarbonization. According to the World Economic Forum, infrastructure accounts for approximately 40% of global emissions. This collaboration builds on previous successes for UK infrastructure firms in Indonesia, including Mott MacDonald and Crossrail International’s contributions to the design and implementation of Jakarta’s Mass Rapid Transit and Light Rapid Transit systems.

The newly established partnership reflects the shared ambition of the UK and Indonesia to enhance mutually beneficial cooperation under a forthcoming Strategic Partnership, set to be signed by the UK Prime Minister and the Indonesian President in 2025. This agreement will foster secure and sustainable economic growth, aligning with the UK government’s Plan for Change and Indonesia’s goal of achieving 8% annual economic growth.

During the Minister’s three-day visit to Indonesia, climate and environmental sustainability will be key priorities, reflecting the UK government’s commitment to restoring global leadership on climate action. Discussions will include progress on the UK-Indonesia Just Energy Transition Partnership, alongside the launch of the Blue Planet Fund and the Climate and Ocean Adaptation and Sustainable Transition (COAST) programs. These initiatives aim to support vulnerable coastal communities in adapting to the challenges posed by the climate crisis.

During her visit to Jakarta, the Minister is also set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indonesia’s Minister for Digital Communications, establishing a framework for enhanced collaboration in emerging technologies, AI, and combating online disinformation. Additionally, she will meet with permanent representatives of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), marking the UK’s fourth year as an ASEAN Dialogue Partner.
