The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has announced a call for bids for the 280 megawatt alternating current Srinagarind Dam Floating Solar Project 3 in Kanchanaburi Province. The project is expected to begin commercial operation in 2028 and is part of EGAT’s strategic plan for clean energy development, according to Thidade Eiamsai, deputy governor for Power Plant Development and Renewable Energy.
The facility will generate electricity from floating solar panels installed on the reservoir of the Srinagarind Dam. It will utilise the existing hydropower plant’s infrastructure and equipment, allowing for lower generation costs and competitive electricity pricing. By integrating solar generation with hydropower, the project benefits from shared operational and maintenance resources, enhancing overall efficiency.
This floating solar installation forms part of Thailand’s Power Development Plan 2018-2037, Revision 1, which targets the development of floating solar projects on EGAT-managed reservoirs nationwide. The plan envisions a total generating capacity of 2,725 megawatts from floating solar by 2037, contributing to the country’s broader goals of expanding renewable energy capacity and promoting clean energy technologies.
The project is open to qualified developers, and EGAT is seeking proposals that can deliver cost-effective, sustainable energy solutions while integrating with the dam’s existing operations. The initiative underscores Thailand’s continued commitment to diversifying its energy mix and leveraging innovative approaches such as floating solar to meet future electricity demand.
