The Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, has announced the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance medical diagnostics and analysis. This initiative focuses on improving the accuracy of disease detection and optimizing workflow for medical personnel. A key application of this technology is the use of the YOLO (You Only Look Once) model for counting centroblast cells in Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stained whole slide images, which is crucial for lymphoma grading. The AI model has demonstrated impressive performance metrics, achieving a precision of 0.808 and a recall of 0.776, thereby facilitating more accurate patient classification based on disease progression.
Beyond centroblast detection, Siriraj Hospital’s AI research spans multiple medical specialties, including radiology, pathology, and mental health. The hospital has successfully implemented AI solutions in various areas since its program launch in 2018-2019, such as analyzing chest X-rays for lung abnormalities and screening for diabetic retinopathy in ophthalmology. With plans to expand AI capabilities to include mammogram and CT brain analysis, Siriraj Hospital aims to enhance patient care and improve diagnostic accuracy across its services. This commitment positions the hospital as a leader in medical innovation in Thailand and the region.
