The Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI) is forging strategic alliances with international partners to advance ophthalmic treatments and technologies. In November 2024, SERI and the Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) entered a three-year collaboration with the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford University. This partnership aims to enhance education, clinical care, and research in ophthalmology. A key focus is the development of tissue-engineered solutions as alternatives to traditional corneal transplants, potentially allowing for targeted treatment of affected eye regions. The agreement also facilitates internships and fellowships at Stanford for top trainees and junior faculty from SNEC and SERI, promoting knowledge exchange and expertise development.
Concurrently, SERI has launched a partnership with German medical technology firm Carl Zeiss Meditec AG to improve surgical outcomes in refractive and cataract procedures. The initiative, backed by nearly USD 14.89 million (SGD 20 million) in funding over three years under Singapore’s Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2025 Plan, aims to enhance surgical precision and develop personalized solutions for post-surgical challenges like dry eyes and corneal edema.
These collaborations underscore SERI’s commitment to leveraging global expertise and cutting-edge technology to drive ophthalmic innovation, ultimately improving patient outcomes and addressing the evolving needs of vision care.
