Betamek Bhd, a Malaysian electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider for the automotive industry, is expanding into the biotechnology sector through a strategic partnership with Singapore’s SiGenex Global Holdings. The collaboration aims to co-develop an AI-integrated genomics diagnostics and sequencing platform based on SiGenex’s proprietary Benchtop Integrated Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) system.
This next-gen platform, powered by Digital Microfluidics (DMF) technology, is designed for high-precision, cost-effective DNA/RNA sequencing, particularly for point-of-care diagnostics. Under the agreement, Betamek will provide comprehensive design-for-manufacturing support, engineering expertise, and establish ISO and GMP-compliant production lines to scale up the platform. The initiative also includes the manufacture of DMF sample cartridges and sequencing components, while SiGenex will supply technical specifications and lead commercial rollout efforts targeting hospitals, clinics, and labs in global markets. The venture is supported by Malaysia’s national push into high-tech industries, aligning with the goals of the recently launched R&D Centre in Rawang, Selangor state which focuses on IoT, telematics, and smart sensor technologies.
If the NGS platform is successfully validated, SiGenex plans to exclusively outsource its manufacturing and assembly for the Asia region to Betamek, subject to a future binding agreement. Both companies aim to finalize a definitive agreement within the next year, signaling a potential long-term partnership. This move marks a pivotal diversification milestone for Betamek as it applies its EMS capabilities beyond automotive electronics into precision biotech manufacturing, positioning itself and Malaysia as emerging players in the advanced medical technology space.
