Malaysian Army Awards Hovercraft Contract to Local Firm IDC Technologies

Feb 2025

IDC Technologies Sdn Bhd has been awarded a contract to supply six hovercraft fast interceptors to the Malaysian Army. The contract, valued at MYR 20.37 million (approximately USD 4.59 million), was officially awarded to IDC Technologies on January 29, 2025. The agreement spans a duration of three years, during which the company will deliver the specified hovercraft to the Malaysian Army.

The Malaysian Army requires hovercraft capable of operating effectively across a wide range of terrains, including shallow water, coastal zones, sandy areas, swamps, and paved roads. These hovercraft must have sufficient endurance for extended operations and the capacity to transport at least ten personnel with full combat gear. Furthermore, they must be suitable for land, water, and Military Operations Other Than War (MOOTW), such as Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions, and possess the mobility to transport both personnel and logistical supplies.

While initial speculation suggested a potential lease or procurement of the Griffon 2000TD hovercraft, industry sources revealed that the chosen model is the Kaiman, manufactured by Airlift Hovercraft Pty Ltd in Australia. The Kaiman is a versatile hovercraft designed for practical use in search and rescue, military, and industrial operations. It’s easily transported, simple to operate, and can traverse challenging terrains like ice, mudflats, and swamps, making it ideal for rapid response in emergencies. Its amphibious capabilities, inspired by the caiman crocodile, allow for troop and equipment transport across diverse environments. Built to high standards, the Kaiman is a robust and reliable tool for a variety of applications.

While the contract award to IDC Technologies marks a significant development in Malaysia’s military procurement, some concerns have been raised about the suitability of the Kaiman model for the stated requirements. Despite these concerns, the procurement is proceeding as a direct purchase, solidifying IDC Technologies’ role in supplying this specialized equipment to the Malaysian Army.
