Malaysia Launches Six AI and Digital Health Programs to Transform Patient Care

Aug 2025

Malaysia has unveiled six strategic initiatives aimed at embedding evidence-based practices, expanding digital tools, and enhancing patient-centered services across its healthcare system. Led by the Malaysian Health Technology Assessment Section (MaHTAS) under the Ministry of Health, these measures mark a significant step in strengthening health policy, evaluation, and delivery nationwide.

The initiatives are designed to modernize Malaysia’s healthcare evaluation and delivery while fostering cross-sector collaboration. Key programs include the revamped MyMaHTAS website for easier access to HTA reports and Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs), a Guide to Using Real-World Evidence (RWE) leveraging local electronic medical records, a Public Health Intervention Framework to assess broader societal benefits, and the MaHTAS Assessment Framework for Digital Health Technology (DHT) to evaluate innovations such as telehealth, mobile apps, and AI-powered tools. Additionally, the Ask CPG AI platform provides clinicians with real-time, point-of-care guidance, while a White Paper on Enhancing Medical Device Assessment outlines seven strategic actions aligned with value-based healthcare principles.

By implementing these initiatives, the Ministry of Health aims to position MaHTAS as a recognized regional Center of Excellence, similar to the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). The programs are expected to accelerate evidence-based decision-making in clinical and policy settings, enhance the adoption of digital health technologies, and reinforce Malaysia’s role as a leader in healthcare innovation. The integration of these frameworks and platforms could attract both domestic and international investment in healthcare technology, supporting Malaysia’s ambition to expand its health innovation economy.
