Malaysia marked a significant milestone in its energy transition roadmap with the launch of the Hybrid Hydro Floating Solar (HHFS) and Green Hydrogen Hub in Terengganu. The projects are being driven by strategic collaborations between Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS), and Terengganu Inc, combining expertise in power generation, oil and gas, and state-driven economic development.
The initiatives aim to position Malaysia as a regional leader in the green hydrogen value chain, supporting the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and the Hydrogen Economy and Technology Roadmap (HETR). The Green Hydrogen Hub, a partnership between PETRONAS and TNB, focuses on producing green hydrogen and its derivatives while enhancing TNB’s grid infrastructure to support regional clean energy ambitions. Meanwhile, the HHFS project, developed jointly by TNB Genco Sdn Bhd and Terengganu Inc, integrates hydro and floating solar systems to optimize renewable energy output. The initiative is part of a broader 2.5 GW hybrid solar-hydro program, leveraging hydro storage to balance energy supply, stabilize the grid, and respond to fluctuations in demand.
The integrated value chain in the Kenyir-Kertih Corridor will combine round-the-clock renewable generation from the HHFS facility with green hydrogen production and derivatives including green methanol and green ammonia. The collaboration enhances Malaysia’s role as a regional green energy hub, enabling cross-border energy trade, renewable energy integration, and ASEAN partnerships.
