Malaysia Launches First Mobile Hydrogen Refueling Station to Advance Clean Mobility Goals

Jun 2025

Malaysia has unveiled its first Mobile Hydrogen Refueling Station (MHRS), signaling a bold step forward in the country’s push for clean energy and hydrogen-based transportation. The MYR 15 million (USD 3.2 million) pilot facility, located in administrative center of Putrajaya, can dispense up to 50 kilograms of hydrogen daily and serves as both a fuel source and a demonstration site for hydrogen technology in the mobility sector.

Developed under the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MOSTI), the project is a cornerstone initiative to support the nation’s 2050 zero-carbon target and foster innovation in hydrogen fuel cell technology. The MHRS project is a collaborative effort involving NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB) as the station operator and technology testbed, along with strategic partners including PETRONAS Technology Ventures, Sime UMW, UMW Toyota Motor, and the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC). PETRONAS is leading the hydrogen supply and engineering aspects, while UMW Toyota has provided three hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai vehicles to support real-world trials. The initiative is designed not only to validate the technology but also to catalyze the development of essential infrastructure needed to support future adoption of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in Malaysia.

The station is expected to play a key role in educating the public, demonstrating the practical use of hydrogen as a vehicle fuel, and attracting investment in green mobility solutions. While Malaysia currently lacks commercial hydrogen-powered vehicles, officials anticipate that by 2030, FCEVs will be a viable presence on local roads. The MHRS serves as a launchpad for building a hydrogen mobility ecosystem, positioning Putrajaya as the hub for clean transportation development and reinforcing Malaysia’s ambition to become a regional leader in hydrogen technology and infrastructure.
