Malaysia’s MISC Berhad and Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing collaboration in innovation, research and development (R&D), and test-bedding activities to advance digital transformation within the maritime industry. This three-year partnership will focus on integrating sustainable digital technologies into marine operations, improving processes through data-sharing initiatives, and enhancing cybersecurity measures.
Key components of the MoU include data exchange and technology trials for tankers using the Just-in-time Planning and Coordination platform under digitalPort@SGTM, as well as implementing data sharing and cloud services to facilitate e-clearances and e-certificates in the Port of Singapore. The collaboration will also involve conducting cyber solution trials with the Maritime Cyber Assurance and Operations Centre, while exploring the application of artificial intelligence, digital twins, and semi-autonomous vessel operations to enhance shipping efficiency and safety.
In addition to technological advancements, the partnership emphasizes talent development by identifying emerging skillsets needed for onshore ship management and upskilling seafarers to operate alternative-fueled vessels. Training initiatives will be conducted under the Maritime Energy Training Facility to ensure a future-ready workforce in the maritime sector.
Both organizations expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential to transform maritime operations, with MPA Chief Executive Teo Eng Dih highlighting MISC’s expertise in sustainable shipping practices as a valuable asset in developing solutions for digitalization. MISC’s President Zahid Osman reiterated their commitment to harnessing digital innovation and preparing the workforce for advancements in alternative fuels and cutting-edge technologies.
