Mahkota Medical Centre Launches Malaysia’s First Next-Gen Smart Ward

Jan 2025

Mahkota Medical Centre (MMC) in Malacca has launched Malaysia’s first Next-Gen Smart Ward, marking a significant milestone in patient care as the facility celebrates its 30th anniversary. This initiative aims to redefine healthcare through the integration of advanced technologies that enhance interactions between healthcare professionals and patients. The Next-Gen Smart Ward features real-time monitoring systems and automated communication tools, enabling more informed decision-making and improving responsiveness among doctors, nurses, and patients.

The smart ward is designed to streamline operations and improve efficiency, with notable features such as a 34% reduction in manual recording time for vital signs and clinical data. Nurses can now access critical information at a glance, saving 90% of their time and achieving faster response times for urgent notifications. The technology also eliminates manual data entry, enhancing accuracy and reducing human error, while improving patient satisfaction through real-time updates on discharge procedures and meal plans.

Following a successful two-month pilot program, the Next-Gen Smart Ward demonstrated improvements in care delivery, including a 16% increase in response speed for critical notifications and enhanced patient engagement through self-service tools. The initiative is supported by a Memorandum of Understanding signed with Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, emphasizing a commitment to knowledge exchange and collaboration in smart hospital implementation.

MMC plans to roll out similar smart technologies across all wards within the next two years, including the introduction of smart operating theatres. This comprehensive approach aims to create a fully integrated smart hospital environment, solidifying MMC’s vision of becoming Southeast Asia’s leading referral hospital while enhancing the quality of care provided to patients.
