Largest Integrated Solar Panel Manufacturing Facility Opens in Indonesia

Jul 2025

In June, Indonesia inaugurated its largest and first fully integrated solar cell and module manufacturing facility, PT Trina Mas Agra Indonesia (TMAI), situated in the Kendal Industrial Park, Central Java. The ceremony was officiated by the Minister of Industry, who emphasized the government’s commitment to advancing new and renewable energy (NRE) technologies by strengthening domestic industrial capabilities.

The Deputy CEO of PT TMAI stated that the solar panel factory is the outcome of a collaboration between international and domestic energy leaders, including Trina Solar Co. Ltd., PT Daya Sukses Makmur Selaras (a subsidiary of PT Dian Swastatika Sentosa under the Sinar Mas Group), and PT PLN Indonesia Power Renewable.

The facility represents an investment exceeding IDR 1.5 trillion (approximately USD 93.75 million), employing around 640 skilled workers and providing technical training to enhance competencies in solar cell and module manufacturing. According to the Deputy CEO, the factory is equipped with state-of-the-art i-TOPCon Advanced technology, enabling the production of high-performance solar panels with outputs of up to 720 Wp per unit and an efficiency rate of 23.2%, the highest in its category.

PT TMAI’s integrated facility has become the largest of its kind in Indonesia, with an annual production capacity of up to 1 gigawatt. This positions the country as a significant player in the global solar manufacturing industry. Additionally, the plant is capable of producing some of the world’s largest solar modules, enhancing Indonesia’s competitiveness in the international solar energy market.

The Director of TMAI emphasized that the factory represents more than an economic asset; it is a strategic investment aimed at advancing industrial downstreaming by fostering domestic capabilities in wafer and ingot production, as well as polysilicon smelting, ultimately building a fully localized supply chain.

The TMAI factory is projected to bring significant economic benefits. During the investment phase, it is expected to contribute approximately IDR 3.7 trillion (USD 231.25 million), and once fully operational, it is anticipated to generate IDR 1 trillion (USD 62.5 million) annually, potentially supporting an annual sectoral growth rate of 8%.

The development of TMAI’s integrated facility supports Indonesia’s goals of reducing its dependence on imported energy components, enhancing domestic self-sufficiency, and accelerating the transition toward clean energy. Additionally, it contributes to the country’s sustainability objectives by promoting the use of renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions.

This initiative is also regarded as part of a broader strategy to strengthen domestic industries, increase local content in renewable energy projects, and create long-term opportunities for employment and technology transfer for Indonesian workers and engineers.
