Infineon Technologies has initiated the construction of a new semiconductor backend production facility in Samut Prakan, located south of Bangkok, marking a significant step in optimizing and diversifying its global manufacturing operations. The first phase of the facility is expected to be operational by early 2026, with further expansion planned in response to market demand. The project, supported by the Thailand Board of Investment (BOI), aligns with Infineon’s capital expenditure projections for 2025.
The new facility, designed to be highly automated, will play a pivotal role in meeting the growing demand for power modules driven by global decarbonization and digitalization trends, particularly in industrial applications and renewable energy sectors. Infineon’s Chief Operations Officer, Dr. Rutger Wijburg emphasized that this investment reflects Infineon’s strategy to enhance supply chain resilience, diversify manufacturing operations, and align backend capabilities with expanding frontend capacities. The facility is intended to operate with high efficiency, quality, and reliability, ensuring the delivery of superior products to customers.
The BOI expressed strong support for Infineon’s investment, highlighting its alignment with Thailand’s National Semiconductor and Advanced Electronics Policy Committee, established in December 2024. This collaboration underscores the mutual confidence between Infineon and the Thai government, positioning Thailand as a key hub in the global semiconductor industry. Infineon’s presence is expected to bolster the regional semiconductor ecosystem by fostering partnerships with local businesses, educational institutions, and energy providers.
In line with its commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2030, Infineon is integrating sustainable practices into the design and construction of the new site. The facility will utilize solar energy and collaborate with local suppliers to ensure a reliable, green power supply. Additionally, Infineon is investing in workforce development through training programs in AI, digitalization, and automation, equipping Thai engineers with advanced semiconductor expertise and contributing to the growth of a skilled talent pool in the region.
