Indonesia has partnered with the United States to develop an integrated semiconductor ecosystem in the Galang area of Batam. The project aims to establish a chip production hub as part of Indonesia’s effort to expand its presence in the global semiconductor industry.
The agreement was signed on February 18 at the office of the United States Chamber of Commerce and was witnessed by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. The initiative is included in the National Strategic Project program under the Wiraraja Green Renewable Energy and Smart Eco Industrial Park development.
The Galang area was selected due to its strategic location and its role in Indonesia’s roadmap for green energy based industrial development. The project is expected to strengthen Batam’s role in the global technology sector. The industrial zone will be managed by PT Galang Bumi Industri in cooperation with United States companies Essence Global Group and Tynergy Technology Corporation.
The first phase of development involves a funding commitment of about USD 4.9 billion. Local industry representatives stated that the project presents an opportunity for Batam to strengthen its position in technology related manufacturing.
Several United States technology companies, including Apple and NVIDIA, are also reported to be considering Batam as part of their supply chains in Southeast Asia. Officials emphasized the need for adequate infrastructure and streamlined licensing to support potential investment.
