GE Vernova Launches Vietnam’s First 9HA LNG-Fueled Power Plant

Feb 2026

GE Vernova has announced the commercial operation of PetroVietnam Power Corporation’s Nhon Trach 3 and 4 Power Plant, marking the first HA-class gas turbine project in Vietnam and the country’s first liquefied natural gas fueled power facility. The 1.6-gigawatt plant is located in Ong Keo Industrial Park in Dai Phuoc commune, about 70 kilometers southeast of Ho Chi Minh City.

Developed by PetroVietnam Power Corporation (PV Power) and constructed by Samsung C&T and Lilama under an engineering, procurement and construction contract, the project represents a major milestone in Vietnam’s energy transition. Under the revised National Power Development Plan VIII, LNG is expected to account for more than 22 gigawatts of installed capacity by 2030, representing roughly 9.5% to 12.3% of the national power mix.

Nhon Trach 3 and 4 are expected to help meet rising electricity demand in southern Vietnam while supporting the country’s sustainability goals. The project signals an acceleration in the shift from coal to gas-fired generation. GE Vernova’s H-class technology, powered by highly efficient natural gas, produces approximately 60 percent fewer carbon emissions than coal-fired plants of equivalent output and enhances grid reliability to support renewable energy integration.

For the project, GE Vernova supplied two power blocks of more than 800 megawatts each. Each block includes a 9HA.02 gas turbine, an STF-D650 steam turbine, a W88 generator, a once-through heat recovery steam generator and the Mark VIe distributed control system. The 9HA.02 turbine achieves more than 63% combined cycle efficiency, positioning the plant among the most efficient globally. It also offers fuel flexibility, operating on LNG today while supporting up to 50 percent hydrogen co-firing and enabling a pathway toward 100% hydrogen use in the future, aligning with Vietnam’s long-term net-zero ambitions.

According to GE Vernova’s Gas Power Asia Pacific leadership, the project will supply electricity to major industrial hubs including Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai province, while setting a benchmark for advanced gas power generation in Vietnam. GE Vernova equipment currently contributes up to 30% of Vietnam’s electricity generation, supported by more than 1,100 employees across 13 locations nationwide. The company’s Phu My repair facility and Dung Quat heat recovery steam generator manufacturing plant also contributed to the project, with pressure part modules produced domestically.
