The Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) is preparing to launch a USD 300-million initiative aimed at installing rooftop solar systems and implementing energy efficiency measures in public schools and hospitals. The five-year program, backed by an approved loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), is currently awaiting final approval from the Department of Economy, Planning and Development (DepDev) and the Department of Finance (DOF).
According to DOE Energy Utilization Management Bureau Director Patrick Aquino, the initiative will align with targets under the National Renewable Energy Program and the Government Energy Management Program (GEMP), which mandates at least a 10% reduction in electricity and fuel use across government offices.
The program supports energy-saving policies issued under a 2024 executive order, including mandatory energy audits, temperature regulation in air-conditioned spaces, and inventory upgrades for energy-consuming equipment.
The initiative is also expected to contribute toward the Philippines’ goal of increasing renewable energy’s share in the power mix from 22% to 35% by 2030.
