Nineteen Australian companies have shown interest in investing in Indonesia’s technology sector, according to the Indonesian Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs statement last October. Following a meeting with the Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, the Minister shared that their discussions centered on potential collaboration opportunities, particularly in the information and technology sectors. She highlighted the development as a positive step, aligning with the growing importance of the digital industry in driving Indonesia’s economic growth.
Data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) indicates that Australian investments in Indonesia reached a total of at least USD 1.96 billion between 2019 and 2024. In 2023 alone, Australia ranked as Indonesia’s 10th most significant source of foreign direct investment, contributing approximately USD 500 million.
The Minister stated that discussions covered promoting cooperation in cybersecurity, including strategies to address risks and threats in the digital realm. Additionally, the dialogue explored collaboration on digital transformation as part of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan 2025-2029. Meanwhile, the Australian Ambassador expressed hope for continued and strengthened cooperation between Australia and Indonesia.
The collaboration between the two countries in communications and digital sectors has encompassed initiatives such as the Australia Awards scholarship program for artificial intelligence training, visits by Australian technology companies to Indonesia, efforts to enhance Southeast Asian economic strategies, and training programs in cybersecurity.
