Alberta Eyes Southeast Asia to Expand Agri-Food Exports Amid U.S. Trade Uncertainty

Jun 2025

Alberta, a province in western Canada known for its strong agriculture and energy sectors, is looking to diversify its international trade relationships as uncertainty grows around U.S. tariffs and market access.

As part of this strategy, Alberta’s Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, RJ Sigurdson, is leading a trade mission to Vietnam and the Philippines to promote the province’s agriculture and agri-food products and to build stronger trade ties in Southeast Asia.

The visit is part of the province’s broader “Buy Alberta” campaign, which aims to position Alberta as a trusted global supplier of high-quality agricultural goods.

“Expanding our relationships with international partners is an important step towards the diversification of our agricultural markets,” said Sigurdson. “Establishing a strong presence in Southeast Asian markets will help ensure the long-term success of Alberta’s economy and agri-food sector.”

In 2024, Vietnam and the Philippines were Alberta’s second and third largest Southeast Asian export markets, with over CAD 257 million in agriculture and agri-food products shipped to the two countries. The mission signals Alberta’s commitment to market diversification and trade resilience amid shifting global dynamics.
