Asia Pacific & Japan-based hyperscale data center operator AirTrunk has partnered with Johor Special Water (JSW), the state-owned water utility of Johor, to implement a large-scale recycled water supply system for its JHB1 and JHB2 campuses. This project, the largest of its kind in Malaysia, involves treating unused wastewater for use in data center operations, helping to conserve precious potable water for the surrounding communities.
As part of the initiative, significant investment will be made to develop regional water treatment and supply infrastructure. The system will integrate with the liquid cooling technology deployed at JHB1 in 2024, boosting operational efficiency while supporting sustainable resource management. Beyond JSW, AirTrunk is collaborating with multiple local firms to deliver the project, underlining its commitment to both environmental stewardship and local economic growth.
AirTrunk’s JHB1 data center, which began operations in July 2024, offers over 50 megawatt (MW) of capacity across 20 data halls and will eventually scale to more than 150MW. Its second campus, JHB2, announced in February 2025 and located in Iskandar Puteri, is designed to scale up to 270MW. Together, these developments represent a total investment of MYR 9.7 billion (USD 2.2 billion) in Malaysia, highlighting the country’s growing importance in the global digital infrastructure landscape.
