The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has partnered with Singapore-affiliated PT TBS Energi Utama (TBS) to advance sustainable transportation in Indonesia. The initiative focuses on expanding the use of electric motorcycles and establishing a robust battery swapping network across the country, aiming to curb urban pollution and support low-carbon transportation.
ADB has committed USD 5 million in loans, supplemented by another USD 5 million from the Australian Climate Finance Partnership (ACFP). These funds will enable TBS’s subsidiary, PT Energi Kreasi Bersama (Electrum), to procure electric motorcycles and deploy battery swapping stations. DBS Indonesia is also participating as a parallel lender.
Key aspects of the initiative include the acquisition of electric motorcycles to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and the installation of battery swapping stations to enhance user convenience. The project is projected to cut annual greenhouse gas emissions by at least 123,000 tons, contributing to Indonesia’s climate objectives.
Indonesia faces growing challenges in urban mobility, with rising vehicle numbers contributing significantly to congestion and pollution. The transport sector accounts for roughly 23% of the nation’s CO2 emissions. The Indonesian government has committed to reducing emissions by up to 41% with international support, aligning with the goals of this partnership.
By 2030, the project aims to cut urban greenhouse gas emissions by 1.7 million tons annually, attracting further investment in sustainable transport solutions and improving the efficiency of public transportation systems.
