Ketech Asia Sdn. Bhd., a defense manufacturer headquartered in Malaysia, has announced that its high-automation ammunition facility in Pahang state is now operating at full capacity. The plant is currently producing 130 million rounds of 9mm and 5.56mm ammunition annually to bolster domestic defense supply chains.
While this output marks a major milestone for national self-reliance, the current production meets approximately 10 percent of Malaysia’s total domestic requirement of one billion rounds per year, highlighting a significant window for further industrial scaling. The facility, which is operated by a 100% local workforce of 120 employees, features an adaptable production infrastructure capable of surging to 300 million rounds annually if transitioned to a three-shift system. To further reduce reliance on foreign defense imports, Ketech Asia plans to expand its portfolio to include 7.62mm rounds for sniper rifles and machine guns, with potential future lines for 12.7mm caliber ammunition.
Despite the high level of automation, the facility faces challenges common to the global defense sector, particularly the procurement of imported propellants such as black powder. The quality of these raw materials is essential for maintaining the ballistic stability and muzzle velocity required for modern military applications. By localizing high-precision manufacturing, Ketech Asia is not only addressing the immediate domestic ammunition deficit but also positioning Malaysia as an emerging player in the regional defense industry, capable of maintaining high-tech production standards amid turbulent global market conditions.
