Menicon Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan-based Menicon Co., Ltd., has officially launched its new MYR1 billion (USD 252 million) manufacturing plant at the Kulim Hi-Tech Park, Kedah state. As the company’s largest and most advanced facility globally, the site operates on an integrated smart factory concept, uniting automated production, digital logistics, and real-time quality control.
The plant is dedicated to the high-volume production of silicone hydrogel 1-day contact lenses, specifically designed to address the surging global demand for daily disposables while reinforcing Malaysia’s status as a high-value medical device manufacturing hub. The facility represents a strategic pillar in Menicon’s global expansion, with an initial Phase 1 capacity of 500 million lenses per year and a long-term roadmap to scale up to 2 billion lenses annually across four development phases. The output is strictly export-oriented, supplying premier markets including the United States, Germany, and Japan. This large-scale operation not only boosts Malaysia’s export earnings but also supports the national import substitution agenda by localizing the production of critical medical consumables.
Human capital development remains a core focus of the project, with Malaysians currently comprising 93 percent of the 150-strong workforce. Menicon has implemented structured talent development programs—including internships and technical training in advanced automation to cultivate a pool of high-skilled engineers and technicians. By integrating Japanese precision craftsmanship with Malaysia’s industrial readiness, the plant serves as a catalyst for meaningful technology transfer. This investment ensures long-term economic impact by creating high-value career opportunities and advancing Malaysia’s position within the sophisticated global ophthalmic ecosystem.
