Hitachi Rail and Prasarana Ink Strategic Pact to Modernize Malaysia’s Urban Rail Ecosystem

Mar 2026

Hitachi Rail and Prasarana Malaysia Berhad, the nation’s primary public urban transport operator, have signed an Industrial Collaboration Program (ICP) agreement. The program, which leverages Hitachi’s 30-year partnership in Malaysia’s rail sector, aims to ensure that major infrastructure projects generate long-term economic value through the localization of technical expertise and the involvement of domestic industry players.

This strategic initiative is centered on modernizing the automatic signaling system for the Kelana Jaya line in Klang Valley and aligns with the Malaysian government’s national ICP policy. The ICP framework includes several high-impact initiatives, with two knowledge-transfer programs in data analysis and railway signaling internships already completed. Future phases of the collaboration will focus on the development of a signaling testing and simulation center, specialized training in Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) systems, and localization partnerships with Malaysian companies. Hitachi Rail, which has been integral to Malaysia’s rail development since 1998, has previously implemented the SelTrac CBTC system and modernized signaling for the Ampang and Kelana Jaya networks, further contributing to local skills through the Rail Center of Excellence in Batu Gajah.

Parallel to these technical upgrades, Malaysia’s Parliament has passed the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Bill 2026, establishing the legal framework for the cross-border rail connection between Johor and Singapore. The RTS Link will significantly ease Causeway congestion with a capacity of 10,000 passengers per hour and a transit time of just five minutes. Together, these rail developments signal a robust era of bilateral connectivity and a sustainable, high-tech foundation for Malaysia’s future transportation landscape.
