Selangor Sets Sights on Becoming Asia’s Top Five Drone Technology Player

Nov 2025

Selangor, one of Malaysia’s largest state economies, is accelerating efforts to solidify its role as the country’s leading aerospace and aviation hub, with ambitions to command up to 70% of national industry activity. The state already accounts for roughly 67% of the sector, supported by the development of the 600-acre Selangor Aero Park (SAP) near KLIA Aeropolis.

Investor interest remains strong, with 100 acres already taken up, and officials expect the first 200 acres to be fully booked by late 2025 or early 2026, boosted by international promotion at events like the Paris Airshow. To broaden its aerospace footprint, Selangor is now positioning itself in the fast-growing unmanned aircraft and drone technology segment. The state has designated 1,000 acres in Kuala Selangor, adjacent to Universiti Selangor, for a dedicated drone excellence center. The initiative aims to propel Selangor into becoming a leading drone technology player in Southeast Asia and among the top five in Asia over the next decade, reflecting the government’s strategic shift toward emerging aviation technologies.

State leaders note that the next phase of growth will go beyond expanding manufacturing and MRO capabilities. Human capital development is being prioritized to ensure long-term industry sustainability, with plans for new schools, academies, and training centers within SAP. These efforts indicate Selangor’s intention to build a comprehensive aerospace ecosystem, spanning advanced manufacturing, services, and skilled talent development to anchor Malaysia’s position in the regional aviation industry.
