Vietnam’s Vietjet has firmed up multi-billion-dollar aircraft and engine deals with Airbus and Rolls-Royce as the carrier accelerates its fleet expansion strategy. The announcement came during a high-level visit by Vietnam’s top leader to the UK, signalling strengthened economic cooperation between the two countries.
Under the agreement, Vietjet will purchase 100 Airbus A321neo aircraft, converting a memorandum of understanding signed in June into a definitive order. Although financial details were not made public, an internal Vietjet document reviewed by Reuters valued the package at around USD 25 billion. The airline did not specify whether this amount includes additional services or future commitments.
Vietjet also finalised an order for 40 Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines to power 20 Airbus A330neo aircraft. Internal documents indicate the engine deal is worth approximately USD 3.8 billion, marking the first time the value has been revealed. Rolls-Royce had previously announced the agreement in June without disclosing financial terms.
The expansion comes as Vietjet navigates ongoing legal disputes in London’s High Court concerning payments for four leased aircraft, but the airline maintains its long-term growth trajectory remains intact. The new aircraft and engines represent a significant boost to Vietjet’s future capacity, enabling the carrier to expand international routes and modernise its fleet as competition intensifies in Vietnam’s aviation market.
