The O Mon 4 Power Plant in Can Tho City is under construction and will deploy Mitsubishi Power’s gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) technology to boost power generation efficiency and lower emissions. This is part of Vietnam’s broader strategy to ensure both energy security and sustainability.
GTCC systems generate electricity through gas turbines while recovering exhaust heat to produce additional power via steam turbines. This process achieves over 64% thermal efficiency, significantly higher than traditional coal-fired plants, while cutting CO₂ emissions by 65%. Mitsubishi Power’s latest turbines also allow up to 30% hydrogen co-firing, with future capacity for higher levels, supporting deeper decarbonisation.
For the O Mon 4 project, Mitsubishi Power is supplying JAC gas turbines and generators under EPC contractor Doosan. The plant will provide stable power to the Mekong Delta, contributing roughly 10% of Vietnam’s national power capacity. Mitsubishi Power also plans to support future projects at the O Mon power complex and participate in operation and maintenance services.
The company sees strong opportunities in Vietnam’s energy transition, particularly in combining GTCC with renewables to ensure a stable base load, and in future use of hydrogen and ammonia to further decarbonise the power sector. Mitsubishi Power underscored the need for international collaboration to develop cleaner energy ecosystems, pledging continued support for Vietnam’s strategic energy goals.
