Indonesia, Australia Join Forces in Developing Breakthrough Antibiotic

Sep 2025

Indonesia’s Food and Drug Authority (BPOM) is collaborating with Australian partners to fast-track the availability of a new generation of synthetic antibiotics, developed by Recce Pharmaceuticals, which are designed to combat antimicrobial resistance and strengthen the nation’s pharmaceutical independence. According to the BPOM Head, the antibacterial drug specifically targets sepsis-causing pathogens while also aiming to prevent the emergence of antibiotic resistance.

In Australia, BPOM engaged in discussions with representatives from Investment New South Wales, Austrade, and Recce Pharmaceuticals. According to the Head of BPOM, the development of the drug in Indonesia will proceed in collaboration with PT Etana Biotechnologies Indonesia under a new drug development scheme. He emphasized that BPOM remains committed to supporting the introduction of innovative pharmaceutical products that address national health priorities. He further noted that close collaboration between regulators and stakeholders is essential to ensure timely access to new medicines for the public.

He noted that BPOM continues to prioritize effectiveness and efficiency in issuing clinical trial approvals by providing a clear legal framework and practical mechanisms to support the pharmaceutical industry. Transparent and adaptive policies, he added, are expected to draw both domestic and international sponsors to invest in product development in Indonesia.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Recce highlighted that the partnership with Etana marks Indonesia’s first-ever technology transfer for an antibacterial product. He expressed confidence that their initial product would be introduced to the Indonesian market by 2026, making Indonesia the first country to adopt the innovative anti-infection liquid treatment for diabetic foot infection (DFI) patients.
