Vietnam Opens First Smart International Container Terminal in Hai Phong

May 2025

Vietnam has inaugurated its first privately developed smart international container terminal, the Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal (HHIT), marking a significant advancement in the country’s logistics infrastructure. Located in the Lach Huyen area of Hai Phong, the terminal is a collaborative project between Vietnamese infrastructure investment firm Hateco Group and international port development company APM Terminals, a part of the Maersk Group.

The HHIT is designed to handle mega vessels of up to 200,000 DWT and features state-of-the-art automation technologies, including remote-controlled cranes and AI-powered logistics systems. This modernization aims to enhance operational efficiency, reduce turnaround times, and improve safety standards, positioning Hai Phong as a competitive manufacturing and export hub in Asia.

Strategically situated on Vietnam’s northeastern coast, Hai Phong is the country’s only city with comprehensive access to road, rail, inland waterways, aviation, and deep-sea transport. In 2024, the port network in Hai Phong managed over 190 million tons of cargo, establishing it as the leading shipping hub in northern Vietnam and a vital component of the country’s export supply chain.

The HHIT’s inauguration is expected to bolster Vietnam’s manufacturing sector, particularly in high-tech industries such as electronics, automotive, and heavy machinery, by providing more efficient and cost-effective logistics solutions. This development aligns with Vietnam’s broader goals of enhancing regional connectivity and attracting foreign direct investment.
