Turkish defense firms Aselsan and Roketsan have entered into strategic agreements with Indonesia for defense industry transfers under the coordination of Türkiye’s Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB). These agreements were signed in Jakarta, marking a significant milestone in the defense relationship between the two nations. The meeting was attended by Turkish defense representatives and Indonesia’s president-elect and defense minister, who showcased the strengthening ties between Türkiye and Indonesia.
As part of the agreements, Aselsan will provide its remote-controlled stabilized weapon system “SARP,” the four-dimensional search radar “CENK,” a Fire Control System, and a Data Link to Indonesia. Roketsan will deliver its air defense missile system “SUNGUR,” the cruise missile “CAKIR,” and the smart micro munition “MAM-L.” Additionally, memorandums of understanding were signed covering the transfer of technology related to unmanned surface vehicles, tank modernization, and missile system maintenance, further expanding cooperation between the two nations.
In addition to the abovementioned agreements, the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) has committed to acquiring Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicles (MALE UAVs). These UAVs will enhance Indonesia’s air defense capabilities, particularly for beyond-line-of-sight surveillance and reconnaissance operations. The decision to purchase the TB2s follows the Indonesian Air Chief’s visit to Baykar Technology, the UAV’s manufacturer, in Istanbul in June 2023.
The Bayraktar TB2 UAVs will operate alongside other unmanned systems acquired by Indonesia, including the Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) Anka and the China-made Cai-Hong 4 (CH-4). In July 2023, Indonesia’s Ministry of Defense finalized a deal for 12 Anka UAVs valued at up to USD 300 million. These UAVs, set to be delivered within 32 months, will come with additional infrastructure, such as a flight training simulator and maintenance facilities. The first six units will be produced in Türkiye, with the remaining ones assembled in Indonesia by PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI).
