The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) has reported sales of 50,000 metric tons (mt) for ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operations in 2021. Combined with sales of conventional bunker sales, which reached 49,988,800 mt in 2021, the Port of Singapore surpassed the 50 million metric mark in marine fuel sales in 2021.
According to MPA, Singapore will continue to diversify its fuel offerings in line with its push for maritime decarbonization, aiming to grow its LNG bunkering operations. As part of its efforts, the country welcomed the first LNG-fuelled Newcastlemax Bulker, a 209,000-deadweight tonne bulk carrier, on its maiden voyage for its first LNG bunkering operation. The vessel is one of five such bulk carriers chartered by Australian mining firm BHP from Eastern Pacific Shipping, and is expected to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions by over 30% per voyage. After completing its LNG bunkering, the ship left for Port Hedland in Western Australia for iron ore loading operations.
