Shell Energy Secures Offtake Agreement for North Negros Biomass Plant

Jun 2024

Shell Energy Philippines has entered into an offtake agreement with the Thomas Lloyd Group’s North Negros Biopower Inc. for its biomass plant in Negros Occidental. Thomas Lloyd, based in Zurich, is an independent impact investment manager. Shell Energy Philippines, previously known as Manta Energy, Inc., is a subsidiary of Shell and operates within the country’s power market.

The biomass plant, operational since January 2020, utilizes sugarcane waste as fuel, providing a sustainable power source. According to Shell Energy CEO Bernd Krukenberg, the plant has a capacity of 25 megawatts and generates approximately 185 million kWh of electricity annually. This project is part of the BioPower Group’s broader initiative to use locally sourced sugarcane residues on Negros Island as renewable fuel.

The North Negros BioPower plant addresses the issue of leftover plant material from sugarcane farming, traditionally burned in open fields, by converting it into clean energy. This not only reduces harmful environmental practices but also supports the local Negros community by offering a sustainable energy solution.
