Saab in Collaboration with DSTA to Supply Composite Superstructures

Sep 2024

Saab has secured a significant contract with Singapore’s Defence Science & Technology Agency (DSTA) to provide six composite superstructures for the Republic of Singapore Navy’s (RSN) new Multi-Role Combat Vessels (MRCVs). The contract encompasses the detailed design, production, and final assembly of these composite structures, marking an important step in the modernization of the RSN’s fleet. The lightweight composite materials used in the superstructures will contribute to a lower center of gravity, enhancing the stability and overall performance of the vessels.

The MRCVs, set to replace the RSN’s aging Victory-class corvettes, will be built by ST Engineering following a contract awarded by Singapore’s Ministry of Defence in 2023. Saab has been involved from the early stages of the project, having designed the basic framework of the vessels. The composite superstructures, in addition to offering stability benefits, are expected to feature reduced radar cross-section (RCS) capabilities to improve the ships’ stealth features, aligning with Singapore’s focus on modern naval technologies.

The first steel for the MRCVs was cut in March 2024, with Saab continuing its close collaboration with DSTA, RSN, and other partners throughout the build process. The delivery of these advanced vessels is scheduled to begin in 2028, reflecting Singapore’s ongoing efforts to enhance its naval capabilities with state-of-the-art technology and design.
