Vietnam Airlines, Vietnam’s national carrier, successfully conducted its inaugural flight utilizing Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel. The milestone flight involved refueling a Vietnam Airlines Airbus A321 with a blend of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Changi Airport, Singapore, on May 27, 2024, for its return journey to Hanoi, Vietnam. Sustainable aviation fuel is a renewable aviation fuel that provides a more sustainable alternative to conventional, fossil-based jet fuel. SAF has been supposed to be crucial in the aviation industry’s efforts toward ambitious climate targets.
Vietnam Airlines is the first airline in Vietnam to integrate SAF into its commercial passenger flights. It also signifies the first instance of an Asia-Pacific carrier benefiting from Neste’s SAF supply capabilities at Singapore Changi Airport. Neste produced the SAF at its Singapore refinery, blending it with conventional jet fuel before supplying it to Vietnam Airlines through its integrated supply chain at Changi Airport.
A representative of Vietnam Airlines stated that SAF adoption will foster a more sustainable future for aviation, ensuring the carrier’s service quality while promoting environmental friendliness. This is also part of its commitment to achieving net-zero emissions goals and mitigating climate change impacts.
