The Nutrigenetics and Nutrigenomics Research and Training Unit (N²RTU) has been launched in Malaysia, specializing in knowledge and technology transfer in the field of nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics. The project is led by the UK-based University of Reading and Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Malaysia, Nutrition Society of Malaysia and the Malaysian-Industry Government for High Technology (MIGHT).
Malaysia has long been known as Southeast Asia’s fattest country, with 15.6% of its total population being obese and 50% of the adult population overweight or obese. In recognition of this, N²RTU seeks to explore the use of personalized nutrition plans to address prevalent health risks such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease in Malaysia. The project is expected to be rolled out by its partners across Malaysia through research and providing training to students and healthcare professionals.
Professor Karani from the University of Reading stated that personalized nutrition should replace the one-size-fits-all approach which is failing to prevent health risks of Malaysian people. While Dr. Cordelia from UTAR noted the N²RTU platform will strengthen partnerships and capital building with the transfer of technology and knowledge on nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics research between the two countries.
