The Malaysian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), the lead ministry that implements national policies related to science, technology, and innovation is encouraging the development of clean water production technology. MOSTI is actively looking for project proposals and is ready to provide funding or research and development support.
MOSTI’s Deputy Minister Arthur Joseph Kurup spotlighted the successful implementation of projects like the Pulau Sebangkat’s hybrid power system and desalination venture in Sabah, facilitated by MOSTI’s funding and managed by the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM Berhad).
Clean water initiatives have been transformative for residents previously reliant on distant sources like Semporna for clean water. Clean water projects is seen as not only benefit public health and convenience but also stimulate the local economy, including sectors like seaweed farming and tourism. The Pulau Sebangkat desalination system, powered by renewable energy and grid-independent, further underscores the potential to meet Malaysia’s long-term water supply demands.
