The Malaysian Ministry of Energy Transition and Public Utilities, through the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda), has granted approval for the implementation of 22 renewable energy (RE) projects focused on biogas and biomass, boasting a collective capacity of 36.534 megawatts (MW).
These projects are slated to supply green electricity by 2027 to Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), Malaysia’s primary utility provider, operating under the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) mechanism. With the goal of achieving a 70% RE capacity mix in electricity supply by 2050, the government has initiated FiT applications for biogas, biomass, and mini hydropower sources through e-bidding, receiving 34 applications between July 5 and 26, 2023.
Following rigorous technical and financial evaluations by SEDA Malaysia, 22 applications meeting the necessary criteria have been approved. This includes 21 projects generating green electricity from biogas (29.534 MW) and one biomass project (seven MW). These approvals signify a diversification of RE generation sources beyond solar, strengthening the nation’s electricity supply reliability. Additionally, the development of these projects is expected to inject up to MYR 372 million (USD 77 million) in new investment value into the RE industry.
