In 2021, the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works and Housing signed 982 infrastructure procurement packages worth USD 889.2 million as of January 15, 2021. To speed up national economic recovery, Indonesia is betting on government expenditure to offset contractions in consumption, trade and investment.
In November 2020, the Ministry’s set the goal of signing 30% of the planned 4,900 infrastructure packages by January 2021. Currently, only a total of 1,191 packages have been signed.
The President also instructed the Ministry to revive the construction sector, which shrank by 5.67% in the fourth quarter of 2020 (versus 4.52% in the previous quarter). It is hoped that the construction sector will be able to create new jobs and have a multiplier effect along the supply chain, which covers iron, steel, cement and heavy equipment industries.
