The Philippine government is set to start the construction of three climate-resilient bridges that are designed to decongest Metro Manila’s traffic-heavy areas – the Marcos Highway-Saint Mary Avenue Bridge, the Homeowner’s Drive-A Bonifacio Bridge, and the Kabayani Street-Matandang Balara Bridge. Construction will start within the first half of 2022 and are due for completion in 2026.
These bridges spanning over three kilometers (km) across the Marikina River are among the 12 to be built under the Metro Manila Bridges Project. A key design feature of these three bridges is their ability to absorb strong earthquake shocks and reduce flood risks in the area, making them climate- and disaster-resilient.
The three bridge projects will be financed through a USD 175.1-million loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The loan was approved by ADB in December last year and became effective on February 10, 2022.
