AT&S has announced a MYR 8.5 billion (USD 2.04 billion) of proposed investment to build its first South East Asian production site in Malaysia. AT&S is a multinational manufacturer of high-end printed circuit boards (PCBs) and integrated circuit (IC) substrates with headquarters in Austria.
Expected to commence construction in the second half of 2021, the plant will be located in Kulim Hi-Tech Park, Kedah state, focusing on the production of high-end PCBs and IC substrates. The plant’s commercial operations are expected to begin in 2024 and will be generating 5,000 high-tech and high-impact jobs.
Chief Executive Officer Andreas Gerstenmayer highlighted that Malaysia was selected due to its perfect match to its expansion objectives under the ‘More than AT&S’ strategy, which aims to create the latest generation of high-end technologies and build up a new technology sector. The firm will undertake a large number of R&D activities in addition to manufacturing high-tech items. Malaysia’s strong semiconductor industry, a well-developed environment, excellent infrastructure, and stable supply chain, have been among the key contributing factors for AT&S to choose Malaysia.
This new investment will allow Malaysia to solidify its status as a technology country and as a high-tech manufacturing powerhouse in Asia.
