American Company DNV and Indonesia’s PLN Collaborate on Power Grid Resilience

May 2024

The American company DNV and PT PLN Engineering (PLNE), a subsidiary of Indonesia’s state-owned power distribution company PT PLN, have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing cooperation in SCADA/EMS design for disaster recovery control systems at PLN.

The two-year MoU, recently signed in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, outlines a collaborative framework for implementing advanced SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) and EMS (energy management systems). These systems play a crucial role in ensuring the reliable, efficient, and safe operation of equipment within smart power grids and microgrids, supporting Indonesia’s efforts towards energy decarbonization.

As a leading coal exporter in Southeast Asia, the nation aims to eliminate coal usage by 2055 and attain net-zero carbon emissions by 2060. Despite these ambitious goals, the country has encountered challenges in garnering backing for its coal phase-out strategy, as highlighted in DNV’s Energy Transition Outlook 2023.

Incorporating renewable energy sources like solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal into power grids increases the intricacy of grid stability management. With the proliferation of larger distributed generation and sensor network systems, there is a surge in data volume requiring effective management for optimal network functionality. Consequently, SCADA/EMS systems play an increasingly critical role in ensuring balanced power flows across the generation, transmission, and distribution chain.

The MoU signifies the parties’ shared aspirations to investigate collaboration opportunities encompassing shared resource utilization, joint marketing efforts, and joint business development. Another objective is to enhance the skills of PLN-E’s personnel through initiatives such as local and/or international workshops.
